Thank you so much for such a great experience right in our own town. The students learned so much and enjoyed the hands on.

Child’s Play: Playing and growing Up in North Andover

For Grades 1-4 (Grade 3 Recommended) who are studying local history units.

This program looks at the land of Historic Andover through the eyes of Native American and European children. How were the lives of Native American and European children similar and how were they different? When we look at the toys and games that children have played through history, we see that learning to become an adult holds universal themes.

This program includes videos in The Worden Theater, engaging questions with our exhibit “Child’s Play,” hands on time with historical European and Native American toys and games, and a visit to the Johnson Cottage where children will see and experience what living in pre and post-revolutionary Andover would be like before going to school was mandated.

field trip options:

  • History & Architecture in the Old Center

  • Daily Life in the Post-Revolutionary Johnson Cottage

  • The Parson Barnard House & Carriage Barn

  • The Old Burial Ground workshop: Looks at the colonial views of death, design, and the infamous 1692 witch trials.

  • Utilizing Energy and Industry: Power and The Merrimack River

  • Local Ecology and Historic Gardening

Thank you so much. I had so much fun from the theater to the games to the cottage.
— Anna, 3rd Grade

Walking Tours: local history all around us

The Society offers several walking tours of North Andover’s historic town center. These walking tours can last from a half hour to two hours depending on the depth of information requested and locations visited.

Tours can be tuned to the specific interests of the group. Longer tours can feature a comprehensive view of the old town center and entry into multiple historic properties.

Active Historic Society Members can schedule walking tours at a reduced rate. Non-members can expect a fee depending on the length of the tour ranging from $30-$100. Price is dependent on the length of tour and not the attendance number. Tours which require special research or preperation may induce extra cost.
