WITCH WAY TO SALEM? North Andover Witchcraft History Tours 2024

It's a safe bet that most people in the region have heard of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials. They may not realize that they were named as such because Salem is where the court was located and those who were found guilty were executed. However, the trials affected most of the towns north of Boston.

Andover had 45 accusations of witchcraft, which was more than any other community. The town had a population of 600 people; about half of them were involved, either as accusers or an accused.

Witchcraft trials expert Richard Hite, author of In The Shadow of Salem, and Carol Majahad, former director/educator of the North Andover Historical Society, will host a tour of North Andover locations that were involved in the witchcraft trials. Attendees will see and learn about the Parson Barnard House, the Old Burial Ground, Rev. Francis Dane and his home, and the location of the meeting house.

WITCH WAY TO SALEM? The Story of Elizabeth Johnson, North Andover Witch

Johnson was accused of witchcraft in 1692 along with more than 200 other women and men in Salem. Of those convicted, 19 were hanged and four others died in prison – Johnson was set to be executed, too, but was later spared.

And yet, during Johnson’s lifetime and over the centuries that followed, her name was never actually cleared. It wasn’t until Carrie LaPierre, an eighth-grade civics teacher at North Andover Middle School, came across her story and involved her students in her case that Massachusetts legislators took notice.
